Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga, commonly shortened to Chōjū-giga, is a celebrated group of Japanese illustrated handscrolls created roughly nine centuries ago and preserved by Kōzan-ji temple in Kyoto.Across their scenes, animals swim, wrestle, practise archery, gather, chase one another and imitate human society.With expressive movement, visual comedy and sequential storytelling carried largely through images, the scrolls are often discussed as an early ancestor of manga.
